Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, Ubuntu and Vista
January 30, 2008 on 9:47 pm | In Linux, Windows | No CommentsFailed to have Ubuntu worked on VMWare on my Vista laptop that I experienced early this month; I tried Windows Virtual PC 2007 today… When first start up Virtual PC, there is a warning message saying “You are not running on a supported operating system, please see Microsoft Virtual PC help for the list of supported host operating system….”
I click OK and continue the installation… until comes to Ubuntu desktop… SAME PROBLEM!!!!! neither touchpad nor USB wireless mouse works; the cursor stays right in the middle of the screen.
Kind of upset about this outcome…but I’m not giving up yet. There is still one more option - Parallel Workstation for Windows.
Verizon DSL Termination
January 26, 2008 on 10:25 pm | In Tech | No CommentsI wrote on Sept ‘07 that I have a problem with Verizon DSL connection and its tech support team. I finally made up my mind to cancel this service and go for Optimum Online. I called up to cancel on Nov. 24 when I experienced the same connection problem and waited for a few hours to get it back up; Verizon is so “generous” that gave me two more days… fifteen minutes before I wrote this blog and the connection got terminated.
I have to use my next door’s wireless connection to finish this… Sorrrry for “stealing” the signal.
Vista Service Pack 1
January 25, 2008 on 10:29 pm | In Windows | No CommentsMicrosoft release Vista SP1 RC2 today to it’s Vista testers including corporate users, customers, software and hardware engineers. It seems that it’s final version of Service Pack 1 is right at the corner… There is a rumor from overseas’ software engineers that February 15 is the final release date.
Also Windows XP SP3 will be released during the first quarter of 2008. Due to lack of software and hardware support for Vista, most of Windows users are still using XP, which its lifecycle is extended to year 2014.
Vista’s biggest enemy is not OS X, Ubuntu and RedHat but its own cousin - XP.
Outsourcing
January 25, 2008 on 9:46 pm | In Misc | No CommentsGot an email today from one of colleagues… It’s pretty funny…
“I was very depressed last night so I called Lifeline.
I got a call center in Pakistan and I told them I was suicidal.
They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.”
Hahaha
Install Azureus Client in RedHat 9.0
January 24, 2008 on 9:44 pm | In Linux | No CommentsInstalling Azureus client is very straight forward in RedHat…
1) Install the newest version of JRE
2) Extract latest linux package (choice of GTK or Motif)
* To extract the program files from the package, type
o tar xvjf Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux…tar.bz2 where Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux…tar.bz2 is the name of the downloaded package.
3) Change to the azureus directory and run ./azureus to start
* cd azureus
* ./azureus
If you get an error message, or want to configure the java exec path, just open the azureus script file with your favorite text editor and edit the given configuration options.
If Azureus does not show up after a minute, you can try starting it manually:
* GTK:
o java -cp swt.jar:swt-pi.jar:Azureus2.jar -Djava.library.path=./ org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main
* Motif:
o java -cp swt.jar:Azureus2.jar -Djava.library.path=./ org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main
4) Please give feedback, if any exceptions were thrown.
