Ubuntu On Sun xVM VirtualBox

After encounter an error for my early VMWare Workstation installation on my HP Pavilion dv2000, I started looking for VMWare alternative…which is VirtualBox, a free open source software from Sun. VirtualBox supports many guest OS’s such as Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Ubuntu and others Linux distributions. I chose Ubuntu as my guest OS since its populality. The following is my step-by-step installation:

1. Step up VirtualBox is no sweat, and Setup Wizard will guide you through (I chose its default setting).

2. After finish the installation, click New to start a new Guest OS (here I chose Ubuntu) installation.

3. I allocate 1GB RAM since I have 2GB physical RAM installed; the more the better.

4. Chose New to create a new Virtual Hard Disk or you can use an existing one.

5. I use Dynamically expanding image since I don’t know much disk space I need for now. Just in case, need more space later on..

6. The list below shows is the complete summary of the guest configuration. If these are correct, click Start to begin the installation, either from Ubuntu CD or ISO image file.

7. Now the installation begins, and you can sit back to have a cup of coffee.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, Ubuntu and Vista

Failed to have Ubuntu worked on VMWare on my Vista laptop that I experienced early this month; I tried Windows Virtual PC 2007 today… When first start up Virtual PC, there is a warning message saying “You are not running on a supported operating system, please see Microsoft Virtual PC help for the list of supported host operating system….”

I click OK and continue the installation… until comes to Ubuntu desktop… SAME PROBLEM!!!!! neither touchpad nor USB wireless mouse works; the cursor stays right in the middle of the screen.

Kind of upset about this outcome…but I’m not giving up yet. There is still one more option - Parallel Workstation for Windows.

Install Azureus Client in RedHat 9.0

Installing Azureus client is very straight forward in RedHat…

1) Install the newest version of JRE

2) Extract latest linux package (choice of GTK or Motif)

* To extract the program files from the package, type
o tar xvjf Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux…tar.bz2 where Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux…tar.bz2 is the name of the downloaded package.

3) Change to the azureus directory and run ./azureus to start

* cd azureus
* ./azureus

If you get an error message, or want to configure the java exec path, just open the azureus script file with your favorite text editor and edit the given configuration options.
If Azureus does not show up after a minute, you can try starting it manually:

* GTK:
o java -cp swt.jar:swt-pi.jar:Azureus2.jar -Djava.library.path=./ org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main
* Motif:
o java -cp swt.jar:Azureus2.jar -Djava.library.path=./ org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main

4) Please give feedback, if any exceptions were thrown.

VMWare, Ubuntu and Vista

Recently just bought a HP Pavilion DV2000 series laptop running Vista Home Premium and would like to install the newest Ubuntu 7.10 on it. I do not like dual boot because you need to restart your machine in order to get into one system; so I came up with a thought of virtual machine on Vista. 

The laptop has 2.2GHz of Dual 2 Core processor and 2GB of RAM; therefore, the machine should have enough power to  run virtual Ubuntu OS on top of Vista. The installation was going very smoothly… sound card, graphic card and wireless are working perfectly; however, found out neither the touchpad nor the external USB mouse was functioning properly… The cursor could only move on the top half of the screen, not the bottom half.

Googling and checking Ubuntu forum, cant find a single clue for this problem.Please share yours if you have any idea to fix this…
